Amara: I sprinted completely naked across the beach after a runaway paper cup, but soon realized Liv wasn't running alongside me for the cup at all — and I unexpectedly loved being the main attraction of her afternoon.
The paper cup shot past my towel, and I jumped up completely naked to chase it, forgetting all about my book. On my very first step, I stood on my own cover-up, got tangled in it, nearly went sprawling across the sand, and only just managed to kick myself free, sending the thing flying back toward my towel. “Left!” a woman nearby shouted. I obediently veered left and nearly crashed into the beach notice board. People were already laughing, while the damn cup continued rolling calmly toward the sea.
I could feel the breeze against my skin, the sand flying beneath my feet, and how freely my body moved without a swimsuit. Normally, I barely gave my appearance a second thought on our naturist beach. But then the stranger started running alongside me, and suddenly I remembered that I was sprinting completely naked in front of an attractive woman who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. The worst part? I was enjoying it too. And I wasn't entirely sure I was still in such a hurry to catch that cup.
We finally caught up with it at the waterline. I bent down at exactly the same moment as the stranger, and our hands collided over the cup. For a second we froze, almost face to face, before bursting into laughter. “I think it arranged this meeting deliberately,” she said. I picked up our prize and replied, “Then it definitely has a better social life than I do.”
Her name was Liv. She introduced herself, still smiling, and helped me brush the wet sand off my hand. When we stood up, I caught her giving me a quick glance and immediately found myself straightening my posture. It was ridiculous. I'd spent almost two hours on the beach without giving my nakedness a second thought, and now I was suddenly wondering what I looked like from her perspective. I adjusted my hair, turned toward her, and caught myself putting far too much effort into looking casual.
Liv noticed my sudden self-consciousness. “Why so serious all of a sudden?” she asked. I admitted honestly, “I think I just realized I was running around completely naked in front of you.” She laughed. “What, did you think you were wearing an evening gown?” I nudged her shoulder, but I was already smiling. “It's just that people don't usually look at me quite that closely.” Liv raised an eyebrow. “Maybe you should chase more runaway cups.”
We threw the cup away and walked back toward my towel. Liv settled beside me, leaving a respectable strip of sand between us. I took out my water bottle, had a sip, and offered it to her. She accepted it, but instead of drinking immediately, she looked at me and said, “By the way, you have a very impressive running style.” I snorted. “You were supposed to be watching the cup.” Liv paused. “At first.”
I covered my face with both hands. I was simultaneously embarrassed and ridiculously pleased. Especially because I was sitting beside her without a stitch on, perfectly aware that she was admiring me, and for the first time in ages I had absolutely no desire to hide. “Do you always talk like this to women you've just met on the beach?” I asked through my fingers. “Only the ones willing to risk their lives over disposable drinkware.” I lowered my hands and looked straight into her eyes. “Well, you're in luck. I'm pretty good at losing things.”
We talked for almost an hour. It turned out Liv loved this beach too, although she usually came alone. She told me a couple of funny stories about her friends, and I shared some of my own beach disasters. Gradually, our towels ended up much closer together, and the water bottle passed between us several times. When I reached for my book, Liv held it back for a moment and asked, “Are you really going back to reading already?”
“Are you planning to keep distracting me?”
“If you don't mind.”
I looked at her, then at the cup still lying beside the bin, and smiled.
“Then next time, I hope something much more interesting runs away from you.”
Liv laughed and shifted a little closer. And I thought that, for perhaps the first time in my life, I really wouldn't mind losing a few more things at the beach.
