Iris: On the way to a nude charity swim, an adult newcomer admitted she'd never been naked around other people. After swimming with us, she emerged from the shallows delighted and reluctant to get dressed. A question about her light dress revealed just how much had changed since the walk down.
We hadn't even reached the nude charity swim when the woman beside me admitted she'd never been naked around other people. She gave a nervous giggle while walking with our little group of experienced naturists toward the beach. I was expecting an ordinary swim for a good cause, not a conversation about someone's first public undressing. By the time we left, though, getting her clothes off would turn out to have been the easy part.
She explained that she'd grown up in a household where nudity was firmly forbidden, not just something you kept private. This adult woman was choosing to try something completely unfamiliar, while I was walking along thinking mostly about getting into the water. "This is all very new to me," she said, with another little laugh. I suddenly felt rather underprepared for the conversation, despite being perfectly prepared for the swim.
I listened as we continued toward the start with the others. Being naked at a naturist event was familiar to me, but that didn't make her nerves silly, and I didn't want to dismiss them with a breezy little speech. She wasn't asking me to persuade her or make the decision for her. I kept walking beside her, leaving her room to talk without making her first visit the whole group's business.
Once we reached the sand, she took off her clothes. There wasn't a dramatic announcement; she simply removed them, stepped clear of the bundle, and found herself standing naked on the beach with the rest of us. Her nervous giggle gave way to a much easier laugh, and she looked genuinely pleased. I undressed too, feeling quietly relieved that I hadn't filled the walk with advice she hadn't needed.
What struck me was how quickly she began enjoying herself once the thing she'd worried about was actually happening. We were still at the same charity swim, surrounded by people getting ready to enter the sea, but she no longer seemed occupied by the fact that she had no clothes on. I knew that comfortable feeling already; watching her discover it was the unexpected part of my morning. There was nothing for me to manage, which was probably just as well.
We walked into the shallows with the other swimmers and pushed off into the charity swim. I reached into my next stroke as water splashed around us, and the conversation naturally gave way to swimming and breathing. She was taking part alongside us, not standing on the sand wondering whether she could do it. For my part, I was now concentrating on the swim rather than trying to think of something reassuring and accidentally sounding like a leaflet.
Afterward, she stepped out through the splashing shallows looking absolutely delighted. I came ashore too, and as we moved back toward our clothes, the contrast with the walk down was impossible to miss. She was in no hurry at all to get dressed. The woman who'd been nervous about removing her clothes now seemed to regard putting them back on as the disappointing part of the event.
Eventually she pulled on the light dress she'd brought for leaving, although her enthusiasm clearly hadn't come ashore with her clothing plans. Looking down at it, she asked me, "Can you still see that I'm naked underneath?" It was a question, not a wardrobe revelation, and I wasn't about to turn it into an inspection. Then she said she'd rather stay unclothed, and I couldn't help smiling at the reversal. We'd completed the swim, she was dressed to leave, and the clothes she'd arrived in had somehow become the least welcome part of her day.
