Access is only by water: take the city ferry toward Hanlan's Point or a seasonal water taxi, then continue on foot along island paths to the beach. There is no car parking at the beach itself, so most trips start with parking in downtown Toronto and careful attention to seasonal ferry schedules. Daylight hours are the normal time for island park use, and many visits last a half day because of travel time and limited services. The shoreline is sandy with gradual entry into Lake Ontario. Water is generally cool even from June to September, and surface conditions range from calm to choppy with wind. Late morning to afternoon offers the warmest air and water, while mornings are usually calmer and less crowded. Warm summer weekends are busy; weekdays are quieter. Facilities include public washrooms and change facilities near the beach, with basic seasonal showers. Lifeguards are normally present in designated swim areas during the summer season only. Food service near the beach is limited and seasonal, so bringing water and food is practical. There is little natural shade on the sand, and sun exposure is high with reflected light from sand and water, so umbrellas or sun shelters, sun protection and secure storage for belongings are useful. Dogs are generally restricted from designated swimming areas and must remain under control elsewhere. Planning around ferry return times helps avoid long evening waits.
